Outlaw: Slot Overview

They say two's company, three's a crowd, but when it comes to books, movies, or online slots, there's something satisfying about a good trilogy. The first part sets the scene, introduces the protagonists and what they need to do, the second one fills in a few gaps and resolves some of the conflicts while setting up more, whilst the third instalment rounds everything off with a big bright bow. Something like that. Anyway, one of the more rip-roaring online slot trilogies comes to a close with a game titled Outlaw, the third in Big Time Gaming's The Cult trilogy.

Outlaw follows in the footsteps of Lil' Devil and Wild Flower, which are big shoes to fill. Each one has been held in quite different settings, but all three have a distinctive look that leaves players in no doubt as to what slot series they're tangling with. Outlaw is no different, and its recognizable 6-reel grid is located in a scorching-looking part of the desert – apparently not far from the original Bonanza mine according to its creator. It's the kind of place counter-culturalists might end up doing a bit of inner space exploration, with a burning hot red rock formation blanketed by ominous cloud formations in the background. Sounds might lean to the ambient during the base game, yet Outlaw breaks out the guitars to light up its quartet of bonus rounds.

Time for some inner space exploring of our own as we take Outlaw apart to examine its bits. First off, RTP is as solid as ever coming from Big Time Gaming. It comes in two forms, whether playing the game normally at 96.1% or buying a bonus round where the figure increases to 96.16%. At all times, brace for a very high volatile ride, which can occur on mobile, desktop, or tablet devices. When ready to take the plunge, stakes of 20 p/c to $/€20 per spin may be selected.

Outlaw is played on a non-cascading Megaways game board made up of 6 reels, holding up to 7 symbols each. As the number of symbols on each reel can change, so can the number of ways to win, maxing out at 117,649. Regular symbols pay when they land on consecutive reels starting from the left, and at least three are needed to do so, except the highest value symbol which pays out for two of a kind. That one is the classic pink skull (first appearing in DHV), and from there, we find flowers, bottles, cacti, and A-9 card royals. Hitting a six-of-a-kind winning way awards 0.3-0.4x the bet for the royals or 0.5 to 10x the stake for the four premiums.

Outlaw: Slot Features

For features, it's a case of old and new components merged and twisted to form something different. Here we cover full reel wilds, Fallen Angel Free Spins, Dizzy in the Head Free Spins, enhanced versions, the Win Exchange, and a bonus buy.

Full Reel Wilds

The Wild Sheriff and Wild Outlaw are full reel wilds which appear on reels 2, 3, 4, or 5. Both substitute for any regular pay symbols, and wins are multiplied by x7 for every Wild Sheriff that substitutes in the win.

Scatters

Two types of scatters land in Outlaw – a regular Silver Scatter and a Gold Megascatter. Landing 3 or more scatters awards free spins, and if one of the triggering scatters is a Gold Megascatter, Enhanced Free Spins are awarded. When either bonus round type is triggered, players can choose Fallen Angel Free Spins or Dizzy in the Head Free Spins (or the enhanced versions). When heading into the bonus rounds, not only do the visuals change, but The Cult launches into their song 'Outlaw' while it is in play.

Fallen Angel Free Spins

This one comes with 7 free spins. Before free spins start, one random low-pay royal symbol is selected as the Sticky Wild. When the chosen symbol hits on reels 2-5, it becomes a Sticky Wild, which literally sticks in position until the feature ends, and the number of symbols on that reel is locked as well. If all positions on a single reel are filled with Sticky Wilds, +3 extra free spins are awarded. For Enhanced Fallen Anger Free Spins, the rules are the same, plus one of the high pay symbols is also chosen to be the second Sticky Wild on reels 2-5. Scatters do not appear in either version of this bonus round.

Dizzy in the Head Free Spins

A total of 8 free spins are awarded for this feature. During it, a full reel Ladder Wild appears on each free spin, highlighting a multiplier up to x77. Any wins passing through the Ladder Wild have the multiplier applied to it. Silver Scatters remain on the reels for this feature, and landing 3, 4, or 5 of them awards 4, 6, or 8 extra free spins. In Enhanced Dizzy in the Head Free Spins, whenever the Wild Ladder substitutes in a win, the multipliers on the ladder are increased for the rest of the feature, up to x777.

Win Exchange

When winning 100 times the stake or more, players can pay an amount worth 100x the bet to buy free spins. Or, if the winning total is 25-100x the bet, you can elect to stake the win for the chance to win free spins or Enhanced Free Spins on two segmented prize wheels.

Bonus Buy

Alternatively, players with access to the bonus buy can buy the regular bonus round for 70x the bet or the enhanced version for 300x the bet.

Outlaw: Slot Verdict

For the final instalment in The Cult trilogy, Big Time Gaming has resisted the urge to freak fans out with something wildly innovative, choosing instead to largely stick to what made the previous games so great. Or punishing, depending on your viewpoint and past experiences. Make no mistake; Outlaw is potentially a rough ride like either game which preceded it – or lucrative, depending on how luck is fairing on the day. The base game coasts along, bolstered by a lot more ways to win than previous games and the two full reel wilds. Although, the Outlaw Wild is a bit of a let down when you realize it counts for a single symbol rather than the number of symbols that would have landed on its reel. So does The Sheriff, but it's got the x7 on board.

Once free spins or Enhanced Free Spins hit, it is freaking game on, though, and there are several ways of possibly getting your butt there. Unlike previous incarnations, applicable players have no need to sit patiently (or impatiently) through the base game for the requisite number of scatters to hit. Indeed, one of the first semi-organic triggers came from a circa 31x the bet base game win, leading to a successful Win Exchange spin, then onto Enhanced Free Spins. It can happen. Or, if waiting around for the right series of events to occur doesn't appeal, there's always a straight-out bonus buy, where available.

As for features, again, they bring back memories of the earlier slots, but with their own unique twists. Fallen Angel Free Spins managed to land quite a few Sticky Wilds, which was nice to see, but like Wild Flower, it does not have the Angel Wild/multipliers of Lil Devil. Instead, the additional multipliers are reserved for the two Dizzy in the Head Free Spins rounds. Without a doubt, the Enhanced version offers the most tempting variety of the two, where the x777 taunts from the top of the ladder. That leaves potential, reaching 14,000x in the base game and 64,400x in free spins.

Not the biggest number in the range, but a fitting total to close off the trilogy. The same can be said about the rest of Outlaw as a whole, and each of the three slots, whilst similar in some ways, has something different to offer. Lil Devil has the honour of being first, Wild Flower is famous for its volatility, and Outlaw kinda mixes and matches elements of both while injecting a few things all of its own. The end product manages to close the curtains on the series with a bang; some might have expected a slightly larger bang, but a big raucous bang all the same.

Superb

Outlaw blends old elements and new to create a fiery finale for BTG’s The Cult trilogy of slots.
