Jellycious DoubleMax: Slot Overview

Do you think software provider Yggdrasil Gaming was thinking about its partner studio, Jelly, when it came up with the name of the slot in this review? Probably not, but that's a good enough way to break the ice and introduce Jellycious DoubleMax, an online slot stuffed with cream, and run on the studio's multiplicative mayhem machine DoubleMax. Yggdrasil has passed the mechanic around to a number of its friends by now (4ThePlayer, Peter & Sons and so on), so it is nice seeing the device being deployed under the guidance of its original maker. Jellycious DoubleMax it is, so let's see what sort of treats the studio has in store.

First impressions… eh, okay. Jellycious DoubleMax is quite sweet-looking but not an explosion of candy as some of these sorts of slots can be. Have to admit that malicious thoughts did enter the mind, such as Jellycious DoubleMax looking like a lesser studio had tried to make a budget version of the Yggdrasil slot Candyfinity. The pink castle base game, the pink interior free spins zone with its empty chair, all smack of low effort, or low interest, or low something. Optically, Jellycious DoubleMax is okay, but you might be forgiven for expecting more from a top-tier provider like Yggdrasil.

Remember Baron Samedi and its 97% RTP? Yep, those days are long gone, with Yggdrasil abandoning the 96% level in favour of the 94% max you find in Jellycious DoubleMax (a 90.5% version is also available). Jellycious DoubleMax sticks to the high volatility, though; in fact, the math model has been labelled as super high, so prospective users might need to think about whether they want to take that on. If the answer is yes, then stakes of 10 c to $/€40 may be picked, and a Golden Bet or free spins buy taken up.

Eight pay symbols, wilds, and scatters appear on Jellycious DoubleMax's 5x3, 243 ways to win game grid. Clubs, diamonds, spades, and hearts sitting on biscuits are the low-pay symbols. They all award 0.5 times the bet for a 5 OAK win. Next are swirling candies, an ice cream, a cupcake, and a gummy bear as the highs, awarding 1 to 2.5 times the bet for a 5-symbol win. Wilds substitute for all regular symbols.

Jellycious DoubleMax: Slot Features

If you're hankering for a DoubleMax paradigm shift, you won't find it here. Jellycious DoubleMax sticks to dropdown wins, wilds, a rising win multiplier, free spins, feature buys, and the Golden Bet.

Dropdown Wins & Multiplier

After each win, the winning symbols explode off the reels, creating empty positions. A wild symbol is placed in one of the empty spaces, and the rest are filled by symbols tumbling down. This process fires again until no new win appears after symbols drop. In free spins, wilds are only added to the first 3 reels. Every win doubles the win multiplier. The win multiplier starts at x1 at the beginning of each main game spin and resets when no more wins appear.

Free Spins

In the base game, when 3, 4, or 5 scatter symbols land on the reels, players win 7, 9, or 11 free spins, respectively. Free spins begin when a cascade sequence ends. In free spins, the win multiplier starts at x1, but it does not reset until the whole feature ends and players go back to the base game.

Feature Buy & Golden Bet

Gamblers have several options for buying into the free spins feature. They are 100x the bet for 7 free spins, 200x the bet for 9 free spins, or 500x the bet for 11 free spins. Playing Jellycious DoubleMax with the Golden Bet activated increases the stake by 20%. When turning the Golden Bet on, free spins have double the chance of triggering.

Jellycious DoubleMax: Slot Verdict

Well that was… a bit disappointing. Nothing about Jellycious DoubleMax stood out as amazing, must-see, or even very much above average, if at all. The core gameplay, whilst still highly potent, hasn't really moved on much since Raptor DoubleMax bounded onto the scene, and everything else in Jellycious DoubleMax, from artwork to stats, came across as a stumble backwards. Where Raptor DoubleMax dragged players kicking and screaming into a rich, verdant, coruscating dino world, Jellycious DoubleMax felt like it was drawn in MS Paint, or if you're feeling mean, on one of those touch screen play monitors at IKEA.

As already admitted, Jellycious DoubleMax's gameplay is technically potent, though. By its very nature. If you've seen a DoubleMax slot get on a massive win streak, Barbarossa DoubleMax, for example, its multiplier can go to plaid, able to slam hard against any win cap. For Jellycious DoubleMax, the win cap is 25,000x the bet, making potential one of the game's key attractions and higher than the original Raptor slot's 20,000x.

So okay, the max win is 5 grand higher, but other than that, it's hard to think of a single reason why a betting person might want to choose Jellycious DoubleMax over Raptor DoubleMax unless they're addicted to sugar. Did the studio put its interns on the job, or it wasn't bothered loading the project up with its best efforts and enthusiasm? Impossible to say, but for a sweet slot, Jellycious DoubleMax left a sour taste in the mouth.

Mediocre

Jellycious DoubleMax goes through the motions fine but possesses little x-factor.
